Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine

These posts represent an exciting opportunity to join a diverse group of consultants and one of the highest performing emergency departments, ranked outstanding at the last CQC inspection in 2020.

Main duties of the job

This job description sets out the details and service conditions for a whole-time equivalent substantive Consultant post (10 PAs) in Emergency Medicine, based at Homerton Healthcare. The postholder will be expected to provide support in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Same Day Emergency Care.

About us

The Emergency Department is a directorate within the Clinical Division for Emergency Care, Medicine, and Rehabilitation Services (EMRS); Dr Claire Charley is the Clinical Lead for Emergency Medicine, working closely with Karen Bryan-Clara the Senior Nurse for Emergency Services.

Homerton Healthcare is a Trauma Unit within the North East London and Essex Trauma Network. We have close links with the regional Major Trauma Centre (MTC) at the Royal London Hospital.

Job responsibilities

A formal job plan will be agreed upon appointment with the Clinical Lead on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer. An indicative job plan is shown below (based on a 9+1 PA appointment, equivalent to a wholetime equivalent consultant). Job plans are reviewed annually in line with the Terms and Conditions of employment. The on call is non-resident and attracts a supplement of 5%.

The post holder will be expected to work 1 late shift on alternate weeks (until 22:00) and 1 in 7 weekends, supporting a weekend working model comprising:

EPIC consultant 1300-2200 (+ non-resident on call)

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • FRCEM, FFAEM or equivalent

Knowledge and Expertise

  • Advanced trauma management skills
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching ability
  • Evidence of leadership ability
  • ALS, APLS provider
  • Demonstrated interest and experience with ultrasound
  • Familiarity with Paediatric Emergency work
  • Familiarity with Acute Medicine
  • Advanced life support course instructor (ALS/ATLS/APLS)
  • Level 1 Ultrasound Accreditation
  • Training in role of Educational Supervisor as laid down by PMETB
  • Level 3 Child Protection Training

Certificate of Completion

  • Presence on the Specialist Register for Emergency
  • Medicine or within 6 months of achieving this

Management

  • Familiarity with management processes and evidence of involvement in management at specialty training level
  • Understanding of the budgetary processes of the NHS
  • Formal management training
  • Appraisal and assessment skills

  • Good communication skills and a sense of humour
  • Ability to develop good working relationships
