UHBW is an acute group of hospitals where a patient may need specialist mental health input while receiving physical care. This role offers high‑level one‑to‑one nursing for conditions and behavioural disturbance, including drug and alcohol withdrawal, delirium, risk of falls, confusion, psychosis, self‑harm and suicide risk.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide high‑level nursing and observation.
  • Deliver a range of nursing and psychosocial interventions to reduce patient distress.
  • Assist and support general hospital colleagues in making decisions about treatment and care in complex situations.

Settings

  • Emergency Department
  • Medical assessment areas
  • All wards and clinical areas across the Trust

Patient Duties

  • Provide one‑to‑one nursing for behaviourally disturbed, distressed or confused patients.
  • Offer support and advice to patients with varied mental health, psychological problems and psychiatric illnesses.
  • Deliver a range of nursing and psychosocial interventions to individual patients and their families, as appropriate.
  • Assist and support general hospital colleagues in making decisions about treatment and care in complex situations.
  • Represent mental health services within the general hospital.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) – NMC registration.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Knowledge of working therapeutically with individuals following self‑harm.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (2005), the Mental Health Act and their application in the general hospital setting.
  • Knowledge of the clinical and demographic risk factors associated with self‑harm and suicide.

Skills and Abilities

  • Effective organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Skills in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating mental health nursing interventions.
  • Ability to interact therapeutically with distressed and/or disturbed individuals and those in crisis.
  • Skills in interacting effectively with colleagues from a range of specialties and departments.

Health, safety and security

  • Knowledge of nursing and psychiatric interventions with patients in an acute phase of mental illness/distress.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management, particularly regarding suicide.
