We are looking for an Associate (0 – 5 years’ PQE) to join our market leading Intellectual Property and Technology (“IP&T”) team at our new office location in Birmingham.

Our Firm

Squire Patton Boggs is one of the world’s strongest integrated law firms, committed to providing insight at the point where law, business and government meet. We deliver commercially focused business solutions to a diverse mix of clients, from long‑established leading corporations to emerging businesses, start‑up visionaries and sovereign nations.

With over 1,500 lawyers spanning more than 40 offices across four continents, the firm is renowned for its local connections and global influence, delivering comprehensive legal services across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. In the UK, we have offices in Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester.

The firm is committed to promoting a collaborative and supportive working environment. Embedded by local champions in each of our UK offices, our well‑regarded family and carer, wellbeing and workplace culture and development programmes provide a variety of flexible working options to support individuals’ life journeys, helping our people pursue their personal and professional goals.

Our Team

We are an ambitious, dynamic team, committed to helping our clients protect and grow their businesses. Our start‑to‑2026 has been fast and successful, we have added a new partner and secured high rankings in the legal directories (including Legal 500). To continue our growth and to support our ambition we are now looking to grow the team.

Sectors

The Birmingham team advises on a broad range of commercial matters across a variety of industry sectors including information technology, automotive, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, supply chain, outsourcing, telecoms, financial services (including pensions), energy, advertising, media, food & drink, retail, pharma and life sciences, and sports/entertainment, amongst others.

Clients

The team advises a broad range of clients from large multinationals to fast growing UK companies alongside investors in intellectual property and technology. Our local, domestic and international presence means that we can support domestic clients to fulfil their international ambitions.

Work types

  • Digital transformation and information technology contracts.
  • The application of technology to the products and services of our clients – such as connected vehicles, on‑line trading platforms and new “as a service” models.
  • Artificial intelligence.
  • Strategic commercial contracts (including supply chain) and outsourcing.
  • IP protection and exploitation.
  • Supporting our Corporate team in respect of M&A transactions.

UK and International

Collaborative working is essential to our success, which means that the team works cross‑office both domestically and internationally, in particular working closely with our IP&T teams in London, Leeds, Manchester, Dublin and around the globe.

In so doing, we work closely with colleagues in other teams such as communications, competition, construction, cyber security, energy and financial services (both in the UK and internationally) in relation to contracts and projects which require a multi‑disciplinary and/or multi‑jurisdictional approach.

Our Opportunity

In this role you will have a broad range of responsibilities including providing support for major projects undertaken by the team (both standalone commercial/technology projects and support for corporate finance due diligence projects), managing your own caseload of standalone work, research tasks and taking an active role in both team and firm‑wide professional and business development initiatives.

Team members are actively encouraged to identify and develop niche specialities so, in addition to your day‑to‑day work, you will have the opportunity and be supported in developing practice areas directly relevant to your interests.

Providing our clients with top‑rate service comes naturally to us and you will be integral to the continuing provision of client service excellence. You should expect exposure to a broad range of high‑quality work at junior level, and a culture that encourages leadership and involvement with the business and its clients.

You’ll work alongside a supportive and experienced team ensuring you are provided with development opportunities that help you grow in your career. From a senior perspective the Birmingham team includes two partners and two directors.

Our team works closely with colleagues across the UK and international offices, giving you access to wider expertise and the chance to be involved in cross‑office matters.

You

This role requires a qualified solicitor under the laws of England and Wales (between 0 and 5 years’ PQE). You should have experience working in some of the sectors described above and experience of many of the work types described above. You should be committed to supporting business development, passionate about the law with a commercial mind‑set, possess great organisational and interpersonal skills, be able to work well under pressure, have strong technical skills (legal and drafting), show initiative while knowing when to seek guidance and supervision and confidently use technology in your day‑to‑day work.
