Consultant Psychiatrist – Rose Ward

Consultant Psychiatrist – Adult Inpatient Services
This is an opportunity to join the Rose Ward team at Springfield Hospital, Tooting, London SW17. The post is established following the current post holder’s internal move. The role requires an experienced consultant psychiatrist to provide medical leadership, clinical oversight and contribute to service improvement.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will provide medical leadership to Rose Ward, work closely with the Ward Manager to ensure a safe, efficient and effective service that meets the Trust’s Key Performance Indicators. Responsibilities include participation in audit, clinical governance, problem resolution and collaboration with team members.
Job responsibilities
- Manage, appraise and supervise junior medical staff in line with Trust personnel policies.
- Ensure junior staff compliance with the New Deal and Working Time Directive.
- Perform administrative duties and record keeping for patient care.
- Participate in service and business planning for the ward and broader mental health service.
- Remain contactable via mobile phone during working hours.
- Work flexibly within a multidisciplinary team promoting risk‑taking and anti‑discriminatory practice.
- Communicate clearly with staff across all disciplines.
- Attend yearly consultant appraisal.
- Contribute to the Trust’s academic programme, including lectures and CPD seminars.
- Maintain professional registration with GMC, Mental Health Act Section 12(2)/AC approval and adhere to professional codes.
- Participate yearly in a job plan review with the clinical manager (ACD).
- Collaborate with local managers and professionals for efficient service delivery.
- Adhere to Trust policies, including financial responsibilities, and support the medical director with planning.
Person Specification – Qualifications
- Primary medical degree.
- Full GMC registration.
- MRCPsych or equivalent.
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or eligibility within three months of completing CCT.
- Section 12(2) approval of the Mental Health Act.
- Qualification in a talking therapy such as CBT, DBT or MBT.
- Qualifications in change management and service development skills.
Knowledge & Experience
- Completed minimum of three years full‑time training in an approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
- Detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness, including psychopharmacology.
- Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management.
- Experience teaching medical and non‑medical staff, including those without formal qualifications.
Research & Publications
- Evidence of participation in research and outcomes of studies.
- Completion of a research project and evidence of dissemination.
- Publication in a peer‑reviewed journal.
Teaching
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry.
- Teaching qualification.
- Evidence of positive student feedback.

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 a year (inclusive of inner London)
