React Frontend Engineer – Software Engineer (Web) – ScottishPower

Location: ScottishPower HQ, Glasgow (hybrid)

Salary: up to £65,500 + up to 10% bonus & other benefits

Contract: Full‑time, permanent, flexible working options available

Overview

Position within the Digital function of our Retail business, reporting to the Digital Engineering Manager. Design, build and maintain Next.js microfrontends and shared libraries in a monorepo, provide solutions from design to deployment, and support stakeholders in identifying business changes to drive growth.

What you’ll be doing

Work in a small cross‑functional product squad with Software Engineers, Testers, Product Owners, Business Analysts and UX Designers in an agile environment, contributing to the product roadmap and delivery.

What you’ll bring

  • Hands‑on experience with React, TypeScript, and Next.js (App Router) including server and client component patterns
  • Node.js and modern monorepo package/workspace workflows
  • HTML, CSS, responsive/mobile‑first implementation and design‑token based styling
  • Building UI layers with clear separation from facade/service/API layers
  • Integrating with RESTful APIs
  • Experience with Git, code review, and testing strategies (unit, component, integration, E2E)
  • Familiarity with Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright/Cypress
  • Comfortable working on large shared codebases with multiple teams

To be successful you will need to demonstrate

  • Experience building quality digital services
  • Good knowledge of Agile and Scrum delivery processes
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
  • Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to support teammates
  • Desire to learn and improve continuously
  • Strong foundation in programming fundamentals and secure coding practices in Next.js
  • Accessibility‑first mindset with practical WCAG 2.2 AA application

Preferred (nice to have)

  • Delivering microfrontends at scale in a monorepo
  • Implementing server actions/functions in production
  • Awareness of SEO and performance engineering practices
  • Experience with structured logging and production observability tooling
