Description
- Lead and manage the Student Governance team, ensuring effective delivery of governance services and resources.
- Develop, implement, and review Student Governance policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legislative, regulatory, and sector best practice requirements.
- Oversee the contractual relationship with students, including those at partner institutions, providing expert advice on governance, compliance, and risk matters.
- Act as the Vice-Chancellor’s nominee for student complaints, disciplinary matters, criminal convictions cases, and final internal reviews of complaints and appeals.
- Manage relationship with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) and liaise with legal representatives on student governance matters.
- Lead on complex student case management, including disciplinary issues, harassment and sexual misconduct cases, and multi-agency safeguarding matters involving external stakeholders.
- Maintain key partnerships with external organisations, including local authorities, police, legal bodies, and accommodation providers.
- Provide specialist advice to senior leadership on student governance, regulatory compliance, duty of care, and institutional risk.
- Ensure compliance with data protection legislation and information governance requirements relating to student records and information.
- Represent the organisation externally and contribute to national discussions and developments in Student Governance.
Profile
A successful Head of Student Governance should have:
- Educated to postgraduate degree level or equivalent experience.
- Significant experience within Higher Education, with a strong understanding of teaching, learning, and the wider UK Higher Education sector.
- In-depth knowledge of student governance frameworks, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong understanding of external quality assurance and compliance obligations within Higher Education.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships at all levels, including senior leaders and external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to champion innovation, drive change, and promote new ideas and approaches.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads, manage competing demands, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive and solutions-focused, with excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Highly resilient, adaptable, and able to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a wider team.
- Strong attention to detail, with a methodical and professional approach to work.
