Job purpose
Under the general direction of the Manager and senior staff, the Nursery Assistant works as part of a team to deliver a high standard of care that meets the individual needs of the children, supporting their development, behaviour, education and wellbeing.
Responsibilities
- Provide high quality care and education for all children and support for families.
- Observe and monitor children’s development and contribute to written reports of their progress.
- Deliver a broad and balanced Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and individual educational plan where needed.
- Maintain client confidentiality and safeguard all children, reporting any injury, accident or suspected non‑accidental injury in accordance with procedures.
- Assist with medication administration and accurate record keeping.
- Support child placement transitions, liaise with local primary schools, social workers, health visitors and other professionals.
- Plan and supervise educational visits, risk assessments and ensure health and safety policies.
- Support parents and families during admissions, transitions and the provision of care when required.
- Actively participate in training and development activities.
- Carry out additional duties as required by Leeds City Council policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Minimum Level 2 qualification in Childcare (as recognised by CWDC). Degrees recognised by CWDC such as BA Hons Childhood Studies or Early Years Sector Endorsed Foundation Degree are acceptable; other non‑relevant degrees are not unless Early Years Professional Status is achieved.
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy.
- Basic computer literacy.
Experience Required
- Experience working with children and/or families.
- Experience in a nursery or childcare environment.
- Experience working in a team.
- Experience planning and organising play and educational activities.
Skills Required
- Strong communication, listening, safeguarding, and motivational skills.
- Ability to write detailed reports and plans.
- Ability to observe and monitor child development according to EYFS.
- Teamwork, partnership with parents and carers, and inclusive practice for children with SEND.
- Risk assessment, supervision of students and apprentices, and use of ICT (Word, Excel).
- Flexible approach to working hours and shift patterns.
Knowledge Required
- Current knowledge of legislation, policy and guidance relating to early years (Children Act, Childcare Act, EYFS, SEN Code, etc.).
- Awareness of child and family stress factors and protective factors.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and child welfare.
- Familiarity with guidance documents supporting the development of young children’s learning (EYFS).
