Become a Schoolreaders Volunteer! Help Children Grow Their Reading Confidence
Schoolreaders volunteers are matched with a local primary school where they listen to children read one‑to‑one. By giving just a little time each week, volunteers help children build their reading and comprehension skills — and help them discover a love of books.
With only 1 in 3 children currently saying they read for pleasure in their free time, volunteers are supporting schools at a truly important moment.
What Volunteers Do
- Visit a local primary school for 1–2 hours each week
- Attend at the same time each week, during the school day and term time only
- Listen to children read individually
- Support children as they practise reading and understanding texts
- Help encourage a positive attitude toward reading
What We Ask From You
- Commit to volunteering weekly for at least a year (Holidays and appointments are absolutely fine during this period.)
- Be over 18
- Have good written and spoken English
- Complete a DBS check — free of charge to you
- Be willing to travel to a school you are happy to reach (Please note: travel expenses cannot be reimbursed.)
No previous experience or specific skills are required.
Why It Matters
Schoolreaders volunteers help children gain confidence, improve essential reading skills, and enjoy books more — all through simple one‑to‑one support.
