Job Overview
Full-time (37.5 hours) or part‑time (22.5 to 34 hours) work. Standard shifts run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with a requirement to work 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm on one day a week. The role requires rotating through all diagnostic imaging departments, including Ultrasound, MRI, CT, Interventional Radiology Day Unit, Main X‑ray, DEXA and Nuclear Medicine. Flexibility and a patient‑centred approach are essential.
Responsibilities
- Ensure a professional, comprehensive reception and administrative service for patients and department members.
- Process radiology scan requests accurately, monitoring breach dates and booking appointments according to Trust protocols.
- Maximise utilisation of appointment slots (including cancellation slots) and communicate changes to relevant staff.
- Provide accurate patient guidance on pre‑examination requirements, medication adjustments, diet and fasting instructions, and discuss sensitive issues such as 10‑day rules and pregnancy professionally.
- Use judgement to resolve patient queries and determine appropriate action.
- Communicate effectively with patients, the public, medical personnel and colleagues at all levels across the Trust.
- Liaise with external bodies (other hospitals, dental surgeries, care homes) to obtain necessary information.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with legislation and Trust policies.
- Support performance monitoring, ensuring appointments are booked in strict accordance with booking guidelines, diagnostic radiology, cancer and Trust RTT performance measures.
- Document cancelled appointments due to scanner breakdowns, notify patients promptly and report risks to management.
- Act as primary contact for cancer teams, ensuring waiting times meet Trust and national targets.
- Collaborate with teams across the Trust to achieve departmental and Trust targets.
- Actively participate in the Professional Development Programme (PDP) and undertake learning and development opportunities.
- Induct and train Band 2 staff and Band 3 colleagues, identifying and delivering required training.
Qualifications and Experience
- Good standard of education.
- IT qualification or related experience; proficiency with Microsoft Windows applications and ECDL or equivalent.
- Experience working well as part of a team.
- Experience working in a pressured environment and managing unpredictable issues.
- Knowledge of patient confidentiality laws.
- Previous NHS or Public Sector experience, including direct customer contact (desirable).
- Previous experience working on reception and in a busy appointments environment.
- Knowledge of national radiology standards and targets.
- Experience rotating through multiple diagnostic imaging modalities (Ultrasound, MRI, CT, etc.).
- Strong communication, operational and interpersonal skills.
