Overview

A brilliant opportunity to join Birmingham City Council’s dynamic legal service. The role involves working on a wide range of high‑profile cases, advising senior teams, drafting and negotiating contracts, and representing the Council in courts, tribunals, public inquiries and other meetings. The position is based in Victoria Square, the City Centre, offering excellent transport links and access to Courts, Tribunals and partner organisations.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a legal advisor to ensure compliance with statutory duties and obligations, protecting the Council’s best interests.
  • Prepare, negotiate and advise on all aspects of legal cases, including claims under the Equality Act and related legislation.
  • Assist HR with major projects such as restructures, redundancies, TUPE situations, and general employment law queries across all directorates.
  • Draft and negotiate contracts and agreements to fit purpose and align with client instructions.
  • Represent the Council in legal proceedings and meetings, demonstrating strong advocacy skills.
  • Attend courts, tribunals, public inquiries or other meetings, undertaking advocacy where required.
  • Represent clients in negotiations and discussions, and instruct external legal services as necessary.
  • Conduct and manage a wide‑ranging caseload of both straightforward and complex legal and advice work.
  • Prepare reports and attend Committees, Sub‑Committees and Executive Committee as required.
  • Support the Legal Services Management Team to meet practice management requirements, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures and maintaining high service standards.

Qualifications

Current practising certificate as a Solicitor/Chartered Legal Executive or membership of the Bar with completed pupillage/registered Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.
