Position Overview
A post‑graduate research assistant (PGRA) or post‑doctoral research associate (PDRA) is required in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics to work on verified algorithms for infinite‑dimensional spectra, control, and data science under Dr. Matthew Colbrook. The start date is October 2024, or earlier/later by negotiation.
The project is entitled “Verified data‑driven algorithms for control and neural network training” and is funded by the Isaac Newton Trust.
Responsibilities
- Develop robust numerical methods for infinite‑dimensional spectral computations and data‑driven control.
- Conduct individual and collaborative research, including proposals and projects.
- Plan and manage own research and administrative duties, with guidance as needed.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies.
- Communicate technical material effectively and build internal and external contacts.
- Support student projects, develop student research skills, and deliver seminars on the research area.
- Attend international conferences and seminars, with full travel support.
Qualifications
- Strong background in the analysis, execution, and foundations of computation.
- Demonstrate the ability to think innovatively, absorb new ideas, and develop original lines of research inquiry.
- A strong background in both analysis and programming.
- Applicants should have (or be close to completing) a master’s degree in mathematics or related discipline for PGRA, or have (or be close to completing) a PhD in mathematics for PDRA.
Terms
Fixed‑term: The position is funded for 12 months in the first instance.
