Apply for the Full stack Shopify Developer (UK based)
Location: Manchester
Job Description:

BargainMax is one of the UK’s leading online toy retailers, offering thousands of products across all major toy brands to families across the country. We operate on Shopify Plus and are scaling rapidly, with ambitious growth targets and a team that moves fast.

We’re looking for a talented Full Stack Shopify Developer to join us as our first in-house developer, working closely with our Head of eCommerce and supported by an external dev agency focused on UX, design, and CRO strategy.

We actively embrace AI-assisted development and expect our developer to use tools like Claude, Copilot, and Cursor as a natural part of their workflow — not as a novelty, but as a genuine way to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and solve problems faster.

The Role

This is a genuinely exciting opportunity to own the development of a high-traffic Shopify Plus store from day one. You’ll be responsible for building and shipping features that directly impact conversion, revenue, and customer experience — working in fast, iterative sprints with real commercial visibility.

As our first in-house developer, you’ll sit at the heart of our eCommerce operation, working directly with the Head of eCommerce to translate commercial priorities into shipped product. You won’t be waiting in a ticket queue or working to someone else’s sprint — you’ll own the roadmap delivery and have a direct line to the people making decisions.

You’ll work alongside an external agency that provides UX, design, and CRO support, meaning you can focus on what you do best: building, integrating, and optimising. Day-to-day you’ll be working across our Shopify Plus theme in Liquid, managing third‑party integrations with tools including Nosto, Klaviyo, and Usercentrics, and implementing technical improvements that support both growth and platform stability.

We work in short two‑week development sprints — building, releasing, and measuring before moving to the next thing. We run a continuous A/B testing programme and expect every significant feature to be evaluated on its commercial impact. You’ll be someone who cares about the outcome, not just the output.

This is a role with genuine long‑term opportunity. As the business grows, so does the team around you — with a clear path to Technical Lead as we build out our in‑house digital engineering capability.

What You’ll Do

  • Own day‑to‑day Shopify development and delivery across the site
  • Build and deploy new features across PLP, PDP, cart, and checkout
  • Develop and maintain Shopify Liquid templates, sections, and theme customisations
  • Manage third‑party app integrations and custom API connections
  • Implement technical SEO improvements — site structure, performance, indexation, internal linking
  • Work closely with the Head of eCommerce to scope, brief, and deliver UX improvements
  • Support a continuous A/B testing programme
  • Fix bugs quickly and maintain platform stability
  • Use AI tools to accelerate development, improve code quality, and solve problems faster
  • Contribute to the technical roadmap and help shape how we build and scale the platform

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong, demonstrable experience with Shopify Liquid
  • Experience building and maintaining REST and/or GraphQL API integrations
  • Technical SEO — page performance, schema markup, site structure, crawlability
  • Comfortable using AI tools (e.g. Claude, Copilot, Cursor) as part of your everyday workflow

Highly Desirable:

  • CRO experience and familiarity with A/B testing methodologies and tools
  • Experience with personalisation platforms (Nosto or similar)
  • Email platform integrations (Klaviyo or similar)
  • Good understanding of server‑side tracking — implementation, data layer management, and tag management

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with consent management platforms (Usercentrics or similar)
  • Experience working alongside UX or CRO agencies
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Monday.com

What We Offer

  • The chance to be BargainMax’s first in‑house developer — with genuine ownership and impact from day one
  • A clear progression path as we build out our in‑house digital engineering team
  • A collaborative, commercially‑minded team that moves fast and values good work
  • Competitive salary dependent on experience
  • Opportunity to work on a major platform evolution project from the ground up

Personal Attributes

  • Analytical and pragmatic problem‑solver — able to diagnose issues across both application and platform layers and find practical solutions quickly
  • Clear communicator — able to translate technical detail into plain language for non‑technical stakeholders and work collaboratively with commercial and creative teams
  • Self‑motivated and highly organised, comfortable managing multiple workstreams and competing priorities in a fast‑moving environment
  • Takes ownership — proactive about spotting problems before they elevate and suggesting improvements without being asked
  • Committed to code quality, documentation, and maintainable solutions that others can build on
  • Genuinely curious about new tools and technologies — including AI — and proactive about applying them to do better work
  • A team player who thrives in a small, commercially‑minded team where your work has direct and visible impact
