Senior Clinical Fellow – Thoracic Surgery

We are looking for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Thoracic Surgery to assist consultant staff in the preoperative assessment, operative and postoperative management of patients. The role includes administrative responsibilities such as staffing clinics, arranging operation lists, and overseeing preoperative and postoperative care. The postholder will provide regular ward rounds and in‑and‑out of hours clinical cover when on‑call. The post may close earlier if a sufficient number of applications have been received. Candidate must have 3 years of pure thoracic experience.
Main duties of the job
Co‑ordinate and supervise admission and discharge of patients from the unit. Maintain accurate notes, cardiac and thoracic monthly audit and record patient details in the database. Take charge of all patients in the unit under the direction of the consultant surgeon. Coordinate and supervise junior medical staff. Achieve specific operative experience targets. Provide immediate cover to patients in recovery and the general cardiothoracic ward, and cover for intensive care emergencies. Consultant cover is available at all times.
Job responsibilities
- Attend outpatient clinics, ensure adequate staffing, and facilitate efficient running.
- Dictate clinic letters promptly.
- Attend consultant ward rounds, and make formal ward rounds daily, including weekends and holidays.
- Night‑time supervision of surgical patients in ICU/Recovery and communicate with the responsible consultant about major issues.
- Weekend on‑call duties: ward rounds, emergency operations, assessment of in‑patients or outside referrals.
- Advise on discharge of patients under cardiothoracic surgical consultants.
- Ensure theatre cases are appropriately staffed and junior staff are involved at appropriate levels.
- Ensure junior staff are available to open and close cases when permitted.
- Ensure all cases are sent promptly, and facilitate efficient transfer of patients if required.
- Maintain communication with relatives of patients.
- Complete data entry tasks and operation notes at conclusion of operations.
- If operations are delayed or cancelled, communicate with wards and explain the situation to patients.
- Coordinate hospital admission schedules, participate in weekly planning meetings, and manage the waiting list equitably.
- Assume occasional emergencies at the request of consultants, within reasonable limits.
Person Specification
Qualifications and training
- Full GMC registration.
- Entry on the GMC specialist register (or within six months by the date of interview).
Clinical experience, knowledge and skills
- Comprehensive experience in elective and emergency thoracic surgery.
- 3 years of pure thoracic experience.
- Previous appointments in recognised high‑quality thoracic surgery units.
- Independent operator in specialised techniques such as VATS lobectomy, radical mesothelioma surgery, emergency airway management, interventional bronchoscopy and laser.
- Credentialed training in robotic thoracic resections.
Research and audit
- PhD or equivalent higher degree relevant to cardiothoracic surgery.
- Understanding of clinical audit, research and medical statistics.
- Experience in academic supervision and leadership.
- Audit activity/publications in thoracic surgery topics.
