Learning Support Assistant (LSA) – SEN & SEMH

Teaching Personnel are currently recruiting dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistants to work across a range of primary, secondary, and specialist provisions in Wigan and Bolton. These roles involve supporting pupils aged 3-19 with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students both academically and emotionally. You may be working on a 1:1 basis or with small groups, helping to create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment tailored to individual needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEN and SEMH needs
  • Assist the class teacher in delivering tailored learning activities
  • Support students with behavioural challenges, using de‑escalation techniques where required
  • Help implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies
  • Encourage positive social interaction and emotional regulation
  • Support with personal care where necessary (depending on the setting)
  • Promote safeguarding and wellbeing at all times

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people (school, care, youth work or similar)
  • Understanding of SEN, including Autism, ADHD, and SEMH needs
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable learners
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)

Desirable

  • Team Teach or other behaviour management training
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., CACHE, NVQ, or degree in education/psychology)
