ODP Apprentice – Theatres

Closing date: 9 June 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with patient care and departmental duties as a Theatre Support Worker under direction of Registered Theatre Practitioners.
  • Complete the Care Certificate Programme before university application.
  • Train and study for a BSc (Hons) ODP Programme approved by HCPC and accredited by the College of Operating Department Practitioners.
  • Attend an additional interview with the university if offered apprenticeship.
  • Provide original qualification certificates before enrollment.

Upon completing the apprenticeship, candidates who register with HCPC are guaranteed a Band 5 ODP position at Addenbrooke’s.

Qualifications:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grades A–C or 4–9.
  • Maths and English GCSE or Level 2 equivalent (Functional Skills).
  • Level 3 qualification in a health and social care related course, or A‑Level study with at least 112 UCAS points.
  • Completed Care Certificate.
  • IELTS overall score of at least 7.0 with no element below 6.5 if English is a second language.
  • DBS clearance and ability to meet occupational health requirements.

Experience:

  • Experience in a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of recent study.
  • Previous NHS hospital or care environment experience.
  • Previous operating theatre experience.

Knowledge:

  • Privacy and confidentiality.
  • Respect and communication.
  • Health and safety requirements.
  • Timekeeping.
  • Role of the ODP as a registered practitioner.
  • Infection control standards.
  • Understanding of operating theatre environment.

Skills:

  • Good communication and following instructions.
  • Teamworking.
