Locum Consultant in Oculoplastic Ophthalmology

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust – Ipswich Hospital, Heath Road, Ipswich, IP4 5PD, United Kingdom.

Contract: Fixed term, 5 months (ending 31 October 2026). Working pattern: Full-time. Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum.

Responsibilities

  • Take consultant clinical responsibilities within the department, managing junior doctors within the Acute Referral department and developing the oculoplastic service.
  • Allocate session time in agreement with consultant colleagues: 8.5 clinical sessions of direct care and 1.5 SPA for professional development (total 10 PA).
  • Provide cover for colleagues during leave and other authorised absences.
  • Join on‑call consultant rota and receive supplement.

Essential Qualifications

  • Full GMC licence to practice.
  • FRCOphth or equivalent.
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in relevant specialty.
  • Expert opinion in oculoplastic management.
  • Independent responsibility for clinical care in patients with eye casualty conditions.
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service, including managing 2‑week wait for skin cancers.
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists.
  • Experience managing junior doctors.
  • Teamworking ability.
  • Effective communication with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Fellowship in Oculoplastics.
  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit, special surgery business unit, and working parties as appropriate.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
  • Publication in relevant journals.
