Job Description:

You will support the Facilities Department at Furness General Hospital as a Domestic Assistant, ensuring high standards of cleanliness across clinical, public and external areas using recognised cleaning methods and equipment, while maintaining safety and hygiene.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in clinical, public, and external areas using appropriate cleaning methods.
  • Identify areas to be cleaned, plan and organise a cleaning programme with ward or departmental staff, ensuring that patient, staff and visitor safety is not compromised.
  • Operate cleaning equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions, ensuring proper maintenance and reporting faults immediately.
  • Carry out deep clean/isolation cleans in line with national and local guidelines.
  • Perform spot cleaning for spills and incidents promptly and efficiently, in collaboration with clinical staff.
  • Adhere to COSHH assessments and Safety Data Sheets when preparing, using and disposing of cleaning chemicals.
  • Follow infection control procedures and prevent cross–contamination within the facility.
  • Handle hazardous cleaning chemicals safely on a regular basis.

Essential Qualifications

  • Evidence of basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Possess or be willing to work towards a BIC’s qualification or equivalent NVQ Level 2.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of health and safety, COSHH and previous cleaning experience.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team without direct supervision.
  • Understanding of cleaning in a healthcare environment and awareness of cross‑contamination risks.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to plan workload and follow instructions.
  • Experience handling hazardous cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work face‑to‑face with a diverse range of people and provide feedback to colleagues and line managers.
  • Knowledge of infection control in a cleaning environment.

Other Requirements

  • Must undergo a DBS check (Enhanced or Standard, as required) before commencing the role.
