About Stitch the Gap
Stitch the Gap is committed to building brighter futures, improving our environment, and increasing access to our sewing skills-based sewing machine training programmes. We are entering an exciting period of growth, and have been successful for the National Lottery Young Start Award. We’ve also started to develop workshops in Sewing Machine Mechanics. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative individual to join our team to support our sewing classes.
Role Summary
Stitch the Gap requires a Sewing Assistant to work evenings and weekends (we are offering between 6-8hrs per week with more hours available over the summer holidays to help support our sewing holiday camps). You will work under the direction of the Sewing Tutor and be expected to assist with the implementation of sewing patterns and sewing machine setup and troubleshooting. You will help ensure the smooth running of each class.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the tutor’s instruction and provide support and guidance to students where needed
- We often run outreach work and so a driver is required
- Maintain a supportive, safe and clean learning environment
- Ensure questionnaires are handed out to each student at the beginning and end of each session, where appropriate
- Support with the preparation and setup of the sewing machines at the beginning and end of each session
- Work closely with the sewing tutor to identify issues students are having and develop appropriate solutions
- Attend open days/gala events where required
Required Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will be ready to work with all students to promote sewing skills, social and emotional development. The ideal candidate will be caring, patient and understanding. The Sewing Assistant must be attentive to the unique needs of each student and be able to identify proper solutions when students encounter issues. You should have strong interpersonal skills, as you’ll be collaborating with the tutor, working with students of all ages and talking to families.
