About The Role

A 12‑month fixed term technician role within the Distribution & Plant discipline. You will be part of a team responsible for ensuring the electrified rail network has safe, reliable power for trains, signals and stations. The role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions, at all times of day, and requires a strong focus on safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily upkeep and maintenance of the electrification system, including nuts, bolts, cables and other components.
  • Work alongside moving trains, ensuring all tasks are completed safely and to standards.
  • Lead, motivate and direct a small work team when required, checking competences and safety compliance.
  • Deliver work safely and challenge any potential safety risks.
  • Assist in arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and identify areas for improvement.

Skills & Experience

  • Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team.
  • Effective communication – clear instructions in both verbal and written form.
  • Technical – knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the relevant discipline.
  • Safety – consistent role‑modeling of safe behaviours and confidence to challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem‑solver – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions and keeping skills up to date.
  • Willingness to learn – continuous development of technical and non‑technical skills.
  • Relevant qualification – NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline or equivalent experience.

Essential Criteria

  • Proven electrical background (mandatory). Must hold either a completed electrical apprenticeship or City & Guilds 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification highly desirable.
  • No progression for non‑electrically qualified candidates.
  • Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Knowledge of discipline‑specific maintenance, inspection, faulting and renewal techniques.
  • Strong communication skills, both in person and in writing.
  • Willingness and ability to work shifts in all weathers.
  • Meet the benchmark for application screening questions.

Job Details

  • Grade: Maintenance Grade Terms and Conditions (Standard Maintenance Contract)
  • Salary: £45,669
  • Closing date: Midnight on Friday 12th June 2026 (late applications will not be accepted).
  • Shift pattern: days, nights and weekends.
  • Outdoor working in all weather.
  • Drug and alcohol testing and relevant medical assessment required.
  • BPSS pre‑employment checks for external candidates.
  • Driving licence (category B) required.
  • Must live within 60 minutes commute of the site.
