Hospital Support Assistant – Zone 3 C5

We are looking for a Hospital Support Assistant to join our facilities team. The role is a contracted position working 7 am – 2:30 pm on a rota system.

Responsibilities

  • Support all cleaning and catering duties within the hospital, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food hygiene.
  • Implement ward cleaning schedules in line with National Patient Safety Agency Cleaning Specifications and Publicly Available Specification (PAS).
  • Carry out spot cleaning (floors, toilets) and handle spillages promptly using suitable equipment and cleaning products.
  • Store and use chemicals in accordance with COSHH procedures.
  • Minimise disruption within the work area through efficient work procedures.
  • Serve beverages directly to patients and prepare/serve meals, collecting completed menu cards.
  • Clean ward kitchen, crockery, cutlery and equipment, and operate dishwashing machines.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and practices according to the Catering Hygiene Policy/Food Handling Policy, using correct mix ratios.
  • Clear food and drink spillages quickly and keep patient tables and trays clean.
  • Flush little‑used outlets (LUO) in line with Legionella management policies.
  • Complete mandatory training on time and acquire role‑specific training if required.
  • Provide leadership by guiding and supporting new or less experienced staff during induction.
  • Assist patients/clients in wards where communication barriers may exist.
  • Verbally report patient comments (positive or negative) to line manager or ward staff.
  • Report equipment requisition, repair or maintenance needs to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain work records (fridge temperature, food temperature, cleaning and flushing logs) as per departmental procedure.
  • Participate in audits and surveys, recording faults and reporting them accordingly.

Qualifications and Experience

  • oLevel 1 English & Maths or equivalent spoken English and mathematics proficiency.
  • Food safety awareness training, or willingness to undertake induction and on‑the‑job training.
  • Previous experience of cleaning or catering within the NHS.
  • General experience of cleaning or catering duties.
  • Experience in an NHS environment or care setting.
  • Experience working with customers, cleaning, catering.
  • Teamworking ability.
  • Passion for working within the NHS.

Other Requirements

Mandatory DBS check with cost covered by the employee if required. This role requires a DBS and, where necessary, a disclosure and barring service check.
