Consultant Intensive Care Medicine

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a 1:8 Senior Decision Maker rota including prospective cover
  • Join a team of 8 Consultants and supporting Specialists and Specialty Doctors covering general services of the hospital, including Accident and Emergency, Theatres (maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedic, trauma), ophthalmology and ENT
  • Provide on‑call shifts for non‑residential cover of emergency ITU, supervising a dedicated resident anaesthetist
  • Lead assessments of deteriorating patients for emergency admission to the Intensive Care Unit
  • Manage Level 2 care locally, treating patients and transferring Level 3 patients to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary Site
  • Lead the team in managing pre‑ and post‑operative theatre admissions
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement
  • Demonstrate evidence‑based practice where appropriate
  • Undertake and participate in the appraisal process and job planning
  • Satisfy the criteria for revalidation
  • Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise
  • Actively participate in continuing medical education
  • Maintain all mandatory training requirements

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Expertise in Intensive Care Medicine (FICM or equivalent qualification)
  • FRCA or an equivalent higher anaesthetic qualification
  • Higher postgraduate professional qualifications in research or education

Training and Experience

  • ICM recognised formal training in intensive care medicine or equivalent
  • Experience in management of trauma and other surgical emergencies
  • Broad exposure to anaesthesia, particularly for laparoscopic, emergency surgical and obstetric emergencies
  • Evidence of involvement and experience in audit
  • Knowledge and interest in medical education

Professional Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience of leading a clinical team
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff and other disciplines; GMC recognised training in educational and clinical supervision
  • Attendance at an advanced communication skills course
  • Evidence of significant leadership roles, training or abilities

Research, Development and Teaching

  • Evidence of completion of audits and ability to supervise junior doctors in research and audit projects
  • Peer‑reviewed publications and recent independent or supervised research with relevant publications
  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training; evidence of previous undergraduate teaching experience
  • Experience of problem‑based learning systems and a diploma in education or other teaching qualification

Management

  • Awareness of the managerial role of a consultant in the NHS
  • Evidence of engagement with the management process during training
  • Recent attendance at a management course or recognised qualification in management
  • Understanding of managerial responsibility and its future development for clinicians

Professional Interests

  • Membership of appropriate professional societies
