This is a 20‑hour, permanent position covering Monday to Friday. The Macmillan Information and Support Assistant will be based “front‑of‑house” in the Centre to triage enquiries, provide personalised information and support about cancer services, and help people navigate the health and social care system.

The post holder will supervise and guide volunteers in the absence of the MCIM and advisor, demonstrate excellent organisational and communication skills, and act autonomously in managing emotive and complex situations. They will also coordinate events to raise awareness of early diagnosis and health prevention, and enable people affected by cancer to become self‑supportive.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and interpret the needs of individuals attending/contacting the service, responding effectively to their needs and providing a professional quality service
  • Triage individuals face‑to‑face or by telephone/email and work autonomously to prioritise needs
  • Deal with difficult and highly emotive situations in a sensitive manner
  • Provide information and signposting to other supportive services and liaise with clinical staff to support patients and carers
  • Provide a confidential listening service and empathic support to staff affected by cancer
  • Provide a wide range of administrative and clerical support to the MCIM including data collection, stock taking, report writing, including annual report and operational policy
  • Organise the day to running or service, organising meetings, bookings rooms, responding to email enquiries
  • Education of health care professionals regarding the needs of cancer patents and the information and support available
  • Educate cancer patients regarding “health and wellbeing”
  • Work collaboratively with clinical / non‑clinical services internal and external to the organisation to provide a seamless service which is responsive to individual patient’s needs
  • Participate in patient and public involvement activities to promote the service including awareness and promotional events outside of the centre
  • Supervise and support volunteers within the team to provide a welcoming and responsive service to users, and support the manager in providing a high quality service

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

  • NVQ level 3/4 qualification in Health or Social Care or equivalent experience
  • 5 GCSE qualifications with C or above including Maths and English
  • Counselling qualification
  • Basic Cancer Course

Knowledge and Skills

  • Significant experience of working in a health or social care setting
  • Significant experience of working with Cancer patients
  • Previous experience of working in a Macmillan cancer information Centre

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will require a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

£28,392 to £31,157 a year per annum pro rata.
