About the role

The UCL Language & Speech Science Library (LaSS Library) holds unique specialist collections of materials in the fields of psychology and language science. Subjects covered include language, linguistics, phonetics, psychology, speech science, deafness, voice and audiology. The collection includes books, journals, clinical assessment tests and electronic resources.

LaSS Library supports UCL Psychology & Language Science, UCL Ear Institute and UCL Deafness, Cognition Language Research Centre students and staff, as well as professional speech and language therapists, and others researching in the field.

The Library is open Monday to Friday 09:15 – 20:00. Including this post, the UCL LaSS Library team consists of 2.5 FTE daytime library assistants, an evening team of supervisors and assistants (managed by the Head of Evening and Weekend services) and Shelvers (managed by the Service Operations Supervisor).

Special Working Conditions e.g manual handling is required to carry out this role. Training will be provided.

This is an internal secondment role, available to current UCL staff only. It is a fixed‑term role until 7 May 2027, in the first instance.

We will consider applications to work on a part‑time, flexible and job‑share basis wherever possible. This is an on‑campus role. It is not suitable for regular remote working.

This role does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL will not be able to sponsor individuals who require a right to work in the UK to carry out this role.

About you

We are looking for candidates who in particular have the following experience and skills:

  • Ability to work effectively as a team leader and experience of line management responsibilities
  • Experience of training or teaching a variety of end users
  • Experience of working in a library or information environment, and using print and online information sources
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly and accurately, both orally and written
