Maternity Support Worker (Community), Band 3 (22.5 hours a week)

The main purpose of the maternity support worker role is to offer the day 5 newborn bloodspot and hearing screening to newborn babies, and to support mothers’ health and wellbeing postnatally across Gloucestershire.

Additional working pattern details: 3 x shifts allocated per 7‑day week.

Main duties of the job

The maternity support workers will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary maternity team, delivering safe, compassionate, and competent care to women and their families both in hospital and community settings. They will work in clinics as well as travel to multiple locations within a working day across the county to provide support, and will provide postnatal care as well as the day 5 newborn bloodspot and hearing screening.

About us

The post is based at Stroud General Hospital, working collaboratively with maternity support workers across the county and alongside the midwifery team within the unit.

Applicant eligibility

Applicants who currently hold, or have previously held, a midwifery PIN are not eligible to apply for this post.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in literacy and numeracy
  • Relevant work or social environment within a health care/hospital setting
  • Ability to work flexibly within a team, react to change and demonstrate good time management
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with a good command and understanding of English, punctuation and grammar
  • Understanding of information governance, confidentiality and data protection
  • Ability to use initiative and sound judgement when reviewing screening outcomes, quality data and screening outcomes
  • L3 Health Screening Diploma
  • Ability to demonstrate proficient use of hospital systems
  • Screening knowledge/experience
  • Ability to read notes, extract data and document accurately on the relevant systems
