The Orchard School is a Maintained Special School for children with severe, profound, and complex learning difficulties and medical needs. There are currently 173 pupils on roll, ranging from 4 to 11 years.
We provide a purpose‑built premises with specialist facilities including music and drama studios, white and dark room studios, soft play, sensory rooms, swimming and hydrotherapy pools, and defined outdoor play areas for different ages and abilities.
Teaching and classroom support staff are supported by a multi‑agency team of nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and a teacher of the visually impaired. These staff are on site most of the week and there are regular medical out‑patient, ophthalmology and occupational therapy clinics in school.
We endeavour to provide the very best learning opportunities for all. Our bespoke curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum and each child follows a personalised learning journey.
Role Overview
Learning Support Assistant – support the educational and personal development of pupils with profound and complex learning difficulties.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils in achieving their personalised learning journey.
- Assist teachers and classroom staff in delivering lessons and activities.
- Work as part of a multi‑agency team to support physical and emotional wellbeing.
- Adapt support strategies to meet individual pupils’ needs.
Requirements and Skills
- Previous experience working with children with complex and profound learning difficulties.
- High standards of written and spoken English.
- Covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016); ability to speak fluent English is essential.
- Appropriate qualifications as detailed on the specification.
- Reliable, flexible and able to work as part of a team.
Legal and Safeguarding
The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and includes a Children’s Barring List Check. Any offer is subject to successful DBS clearance and two satisfactory references.

Working Hours & Salary
32.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday during term time plus training days. Salary Grade C, SCP 5-8 (£25,583 p.a. – £26,824 p.a). Pro‑rata salary £20,052 p.a. – £21,296 p.a.
