Specialist Clinical Physiologist (Neurophysiology)

Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust, a specialised children’s hospital in London, has a vacancy for a fixed-term Band 6 Clinical Physiologist. The Department of Clinical Neurophysiology operates daily outpatient clinics and provides specialist services in EEG video telemetry and intra-operative spinal monitoring. Work is performed across wards, ICU, video telemetry and operating theatres, mainly on children with complex neurological conditions.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform a broad range of clinical investigations on children, working independently in the department, on wards and in operating theatres.
  • Provide concise factual reports.
  • Investigations are primarily non-standard and complex.
  • Plan, perform, interpret and report unsupervised neurophysiological investigations.
  • Ensure accurate logging and filing of data from investigations.
  • Participate in training and supervision of junior staff, trainees and visitors.
  • Take part in an on‑call service; may be required to work extended hours, including weekends and bank holidays.
  • Participate in weekly teaching meetings and maintain continuous professional development.
  • Show flexibility in daily work to meet clinical needs.
  • Provide technical assistance to research and development studies as directed by the Clinical Physiology Service Manager.
  • Report faults or problems with equipment to the Professional Service Manager or Clinical Engineers.
  • May undertake ordering of consumables.
  • Maintain personal compliance with mandatory professional and personal development.

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) or equivalent specialist training
  • ANS Part 1 and/or B‑Teg/GNVQ (Neurophysiology) or equivalent.
  • ANS part 2, or equivalent.
  • Evidence or willingness to undertake further professional study
  • AHCS/HCPC registration
  • Neurophysiology specialist course

Experience / Knowledge

  • Broad experience of performing clinical EEG and evoked potential recordings
  • Experience working with children
  • Basic grounding in clinical neurophysiology
  • Interest in epilepsy syndromes and other paroxysmal events
  • Broad understanding of occupational policies

Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform a wide range of neurophysiological tests
  • Ability to organise own workload to deadlines
  • Ability to communicate with staff within the multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate well with children, their families and/or carers, sometimes in distressing/emotional situations.

Contract

Fixed term, 12 months, full‑time.

Salary

£47,951 to £56,863 a year inclusive.
