Role Overview
The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for a range of construction projects, including residential developments, refurbishments, and commercial works. You will play a key role in the pre-construction phase, supporting tender submissions and ensuring projects are commercially viable while upholding the company’s commitment to quality, safety, and timely delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation & Tendering
- Prepare detailed cost estimates from drawings, specifications, and client briefs
- Conduct material take-offs and quantify labour, plant, and subcontract requirements
- Produce tender documentation and pricing schedules
- Analyse and evaluate tender returns from subcontractors and suppliers
- Identify risks, opportunities, and value engineering options
- Pre-Construction Support
- Collaborate with design, planning, and project teams during the bid stage
- Attend site visits and pre-tender meetings
- Support bid submissions for new‑build, refurbishment, and housing projects
- Assist in developing project programmes and cost plans
- Commercial & Financial Control
- Ensure estimates align with project budgets and company margins
- Monitor market rates, supply chain pricing, and cost trends
- Maintain accurate records of estimates and tender outcomes
- Provide handover information to commercial and delivery teams
- Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Work closely with internal teams, including site management and commercial departments
- Build and maintain strong relationships within the supply chain
Key Requirements
- Experience
- Proven experience as an Estimator in the construction industry
- Experience in residential, social housing, or commercial projects preferred
- Strong understanding of construction methods and building regulations
- Experience working for a main contractor or design & build company
- Skills & Knowledge
- Excellent numerical and analytical skills
- Strong knowledge of estimating software and Excel
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
- Good understanding of HSEQ and compliance requirements
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field (preferred)
- Relevant professional membership (e.g. CIOB/RICS) desirable
