Healthcare Support Worker MSDEC

The Healthcare Support Worker is a member of the ward/department team who implements prescribed care and/or undertakes some higher-level clinical activities as directed by a registered nurse.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist with the maintenance of patient hygiene
  • Wash and bathe patients in bed, at bedside, or in the bathroom, using hoists as appropriate
  • Care of patients’ mouths; give mouthwash, clean teeth, and care of dentures
  • Wash patients’ hair in the bathroom, comb, and brush
  • Care and cleaning of nails
  • Assist with feeding patients
  • Assist patients in choosing appropriate food and drink
  • Serve patient meals and clean up afterwards
  • Assist individual patients with feeding
  • Report on patients’ intake and record on chart as appropriate
  • Prepare beverages and water jugs as required

Job responsibilities

  • Assist with patients’ elimination needs
  • Provide bedpans and urinals
  • Collect and clean bedpans and urinals
  • Assist patients to use commodes
  • Clean commodes
  • Escort patients to and from lavatory
  • Care of incontinent patients
  • Record outputs where appropriate
  • Collect and test urine samples

Person Specification

Experience

  • Experience working in an acute medical setting
  • Knowledge of confidentiality
  • Awareness of Health and Safety
  • Awareness of Clinical Risk
  • Knowledge of principles of speciality

Qualifications

  • NVQ 2/3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
  • GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths or equivalent
  • First Aid Qualification
  • ECG
  • Venepuncture
  • Senior Health Care Support worker Programme

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to communicate in English
  • Proficient in reading and writing in the English language
  • Ability to mentor and supervise other HCAs in the working environment
