Job Summary
At University Hospitals Birmingham, our Estates teams have always understood a simple truth: patient safety starts with safe, well‑maintained buildings and facilities. Following a review, this role has been formally re‑evaluated and uplifted to Band 5, recognising the level of skill, responsibility and judgement required.
This post is based at Solihull Hospital, a site that offers a family feel and strong community ties. Successful candidates will see first‑hand how their work directly impacts patient care every day. You will join a collaborative Estates team of around 35 multi‑skilled trade professionals delivering services across inpatient areas, outpatients and theatres, focusing on developing, training and retaining skills within our own teams and reducing reliance on external contractors.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
You will undertake planned, reactive and emergency maintenance across a complex estate, ensuring electrical systems, plant and associated infrastructure are safe, compliant and fully operational. Tasks include inspection, testing, fault diagnosis, repair and commissioning of electrical installations and equipment in line with statutory legislation and Trust policies. Acting as a Competent Person, you will use approved isolation, permit‑to‑work and safe systems of work to ensure tasks are completed to a high standard.
The role involves managing and prioritising workloads, responding to routine and urgent requests while minimising disruption to clinical services. You will provide day‑to‑day technical oversight and guidance to maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors, ensuring quality, safety and professionalism. Working both independently and as part of a wider multi‑trade team, you will contribute to service continuity through participation in the on‑call rota. Identifying risks, escalating defects and supporting continuous improvement are central to maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
You will benefit from 27 days annual leave plus flexible bank holidays, rising to 33 with service, a renowned pension scheme that includes life assurance and long‑term security. Combined with stable employment, development opportunities and the chance to make a real difference locally, Solihull is a place where people choose to build a long‑term career.
