Data Engineer (3574) – Monument Place

GTR are recruiting a Data Engineerbased out of Monument Place

This is a great opportunity for an individual with a proven track record to work for one of the country’s busiest and award-winning rail companies.

Job Purpose

As a Data Engineer, you will design,buildandmaintainhighqualitydata models and pipelines within GTR’sDataHubplatform to enable trusted reporting,analyticsand advanced machine learningusecases. You will work closely with analysts across the business to translate requirements into performant,well governeddata products that support both operational insight and future predictive work.

While the role is primarily technical, you will be expected todemonstratesufficient business understanding to work effectively with subject matter experts, understandend-to-endusecases, and deliver data solutions that genuinely meet operational anddecisionmakingneeds.

Second stage: TBC (in person, Monument Place)

Key Accountabilities:

  • Design, build andmaintaincurated data models within theDataHubplatform (including Lakehouse,Warehouseand semantic models) to support reporting,analyticsand downstream ML use cases.
  • Accountable for data quality and engineering standards up to the semantic model layer; report creation and interpretation sit with Pro licence holders in the business.
  • Develop,maintainand monitor ETL / ELT pipelines using Microsoft Fabric pipelines and associated tooling.
  • Work closely with analysts and SMEs across the business to understand requirements, shape use cases and translate these into robust data solutions.
  • Support delivery across the full project lifecycle, frominitialscoping and design through development,testingand controlled deployment.
  • Ensure data models are performant, scalable, well documented and aligned to agreed architectural and governance standards.
  • Collaborate with the Insight & Governance team to ensure data structures are suitable for machine learning, predictiveanalyticsand AI workloads.
  • Contribute to data quality monitoring, issueresolutionand continuous improvement of existing datasets.
  • Adhere to agreed platform governance,deploymentand change management processes (Dev / UAT / Production).

Context:

TheDataHubplatform is built on Microsoft Fabric and underpins analytics across GTR. Historically engineering has been delivered via a managed service provider; this role supports the transition to a blended model with increasedinhousecapability

While strategic ownership sits with the Head of Data & AI, the Platform Lead holds daytoday accountability for the safe and effective operation of theDataHubplatform

DataHubis alargescaleenterprise platform, serving over 2,000 users, integrating with 50+systemsand encompassing more than 40 data products

The Platform Lead is accountable for thedaytodaymanagement and operational integrity of thisendtoendecosystem, ensuring all components function cohesively

The role requires a strongunderstanding of how data models, pipelines,reportingand access controls interconnect, along with the ability to manage escalations from a wide range of stakeholders across the business

This demands a high degree oftechnical judgement to resolve issues quickly whilemaintainingplatformstability, governance andlongtermsustainability

The complexity of the platform will continue to increase as wider industry stakeholders, including Network Rail,DfTOand GBR/GBRX initiatives, require access, introducingadditionalintegration, governance and operational risk considerations that must be managed effectively

Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of data engineering principles, including data modelling, ETL /ELTand pipeline orchestration.
  • Good understanding of medallion architecture (Bronze / Silver / Gold) and analytical data modelling patterns.
  • Awareness of how data models support advanced analytics, machinelearningand AI use cases.

Skills:

  • Strong SQL and data transformation skills.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, Warehouse, semantic models,notebooksand pipelines.
  • Ability to engage constructively withnon-technicalstakeholders and understand business context and constraints.
  • Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.

Experience:

  • Experience delivering data engineering solutions in an enterprise orlarge-scaleenvironment.
  • Experience supporting reporting and analytics platforms (e.g. Power BI).
  • Experience working within formal delivery,governanceand change management processes.
  • Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or related discipline or equivalent experience.
