We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and forward‑thinking colleague into the role of a locum Consultant in General Otolaryngology with an interest in head and neck for a fixed 12‑month post. This is a 10 programmed activity (PA’s) fixed‑term locum post created to support the elective recovery and the Head and Neck services within the ENT department. The successful applicant can start as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

As a consultant ENT surgeon you will deliver elective and emergency care, including contributing to a 1 in 8 emergency non‑resident on‑call rota. You will work across all Trust sites, with elective day‑case and outpatient clinic activity at the Birmingham Treatment Centre (BTC) and further elective outpatients, inpatient operating and on‑call activity at Midland Metropolitan Hospital (MMUH). You will also support the team through medical education, quality improvement activity and research, and may take on an additional role as an educator. An interest in medical education is welcome, and we encourage engaging in postgraduate teaching and training undergraduate students from the University of Birmingham and Aston University.

Essential qualifications

  • Basic medical degree
  • FRCS (ORL‑HNS) or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Otolaryngology (or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at the time of interview)

Desirable qualifications

  • Higher degree

Essential clinical experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in ENT with wide experience in Head and Neck surgery.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute ENT emergencies and the care of elective ENT patients.

Desirable clinical experience

  • Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery.

Essential management and administrative experience

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Ability to plan strategically and exercise sound judgement when faced with conflicting pressures.
  • Ability to motivate and develop the multi‑disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.

Essential clinical effectiveness

  • Experience of conducting clinical audit.
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision‑making.

Essential teaching and training experience

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • Ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff.

Desirable teaching and training experience

  • Formal training in teaching.

Essential research, innovation and service improvement experience

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
  • Awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues.
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to ENT.

Desirable research, innovation and service improvement experience

  • Publications in relevant peer‑reviewed journals in the last five years.
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research.

  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice.
  • CCT in Otolaryngology or within 6 months of obtaining it.
  • Appropriate immigration status (where appropriate).
  • Understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.

Essential personal circumstances

  • Residence within a reasonable distance of MMUH.
  • Ability to undertake clinical commitments at any of the Trust’s sites.

Essential professional and multi‑disciplinary team working

  • Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team.
