Senior Engineer – Issue Management

This contract is for an automotive client and the role is a Senior Engineer – Issue Management.

You will take ownership of the Issue Management System (IMS), ensuring effective tracking, governance, and resolution of engineering issues through a structured, ticket-based process.

This role is pivotal in driving accountability across engineering teams, ensuring adherence to the 8D problem-solving methodology, and embedding lessons learned into future vehicle programmes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Issue Management & Process Ownership: Oversee and administer the Issue Management System (IMS); govern the lifecycle of engineering issues via a ticket-based system; ensure all issues are documented, progressed, and closed in line with defined processes; maintain data integrity and traceability across all issue records.

Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the central point of coordination between engineering teams; drive timely updates from engineers and ensure tickets are actively progressed; challenge and support engineers to ensure robust root cause analysis and corrective actions.

8D Problem-Solving Governance

  • Ensure the structured use of the 8D methodology across all issue resolution activities; review and approve proposed corrective actions from engineers; provide constructive challenge where solutions lack robustness or completeness.

Lessons Learned & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead lessons learned activities across vehicle programmes; analyse historical issue data to identify recurring themes and risks; ensure previous issues and resolutions are proactively fed into new vehicle designs; support engineering teams by highlighting known risks such as past design issues.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Extract and analyse IMS data to produce KPIs, reports, and insights; track trends, performance metrics, and issue resolution effectiveness; present findings to stakeholders to support decision-making and process improvements.

System Administration

  • Act as the primary user and administrator of the IMS; support users with system access, training, and day-to-day queries; ensure consistent use of the system across the organisation.

Essential Key Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with issue management, quality systems, or engineering governance processes.
  • Strong understanding of structured problem-solving methods (e.g. 8D, root cause analysis).
  • Ability to challenge engineers constructively and influence outcomes.
  • Strong organisational and coordination skills.
  • Experience handling data analysis, reporting, and KPI tracking.
  • Good stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Background in automotive engineering or a similar regulated industry (e.g. aerospace, defence).
  • Familiarity with ticket-based issue management systems.
  • Understanding of vehicle development or product lifecycle processes.
  • Exposure to quality or continuous improvement frameworks.

Candidate Profile

  • Methodical and process-driven with high attention to detail.
  • Confident and assertive when challenging technical decisions.
  • Strong communicator who can engage with engineering teams at all levels.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret and leverage data.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, programme-driven environment.
