About the role
At Rethink Mental Illness, we believe everyone severely affected by mental illness deserves the chance of a better life. We’re looking for a Stepdown Recovery Officer to join our community mental health services and play a vital role in supporting people as they move from inpatient care towards greater independence.
This is a hands‑on, people‑focused role where you’ll work alongside clinical teams, housing partners and local authorities to help individuals leave stepdown accommodation safely, confidently and at the right time. You’ll support people to build skills, access services and take steps towards recovery — always in a way that feels personal, respectful and empowering.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll work directly with people using our stepdown service, supporting them through the transition back into the community. This will include:
- Coordinating discharge planning alongside multidisciplinary teams and community services
- Supporting individuals with everyday living skills, appointment escorts and recovery activities
- Working with housing teams and local authorities to support assessments and accommodation pathways
- Running regular one‑to‑one support sessions focused on goals, independence and recovery
- Identifying barriers to discharge early and helping find practical solutions
- Building trusted, professional relationships that promote safety, dignity and hope
- Keeping accurate records and contributing to service monitoring and improvement
- Championing recovery values across the service and with partner organisations
Every day will be different, but your focus will always be on helping people move forward in their recovery.
About you
You don’t need to have “been a Recovery Officer” before — what matters most is your attitude, values and experience of working with people.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has experience (paid or voluntary) in mental health, social care or a similar setting
- Understands mental health crisis and the challenges people face during discharge transitions
- Can work independently, manage priorities and problem‑solve creatively
- Communicates clearly, respectfully and confidently with a wide range of professionals
- Is person‑centred, strengths‑based and motivated by helping people build independence
- Has good written skills and can maintain accurate, confidential records
Knowledge of local services across Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon and Westminster would be an advantage, but it’s not essential.
Why work for Rethink?
- Meaningful work that makes a real impact
- Supportive management and regular supervision
- Ongoing training and development opportunities
- A strong commitment to wellbeing, diversity and inclusion
- The chance to shape recovery‑focused practice within mental health services
