About the role:
The school is a specialist secondary provision Sleaford supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. The school focuses on delivering the core curriculum alongside Functional Skills and independent life skills, helping learners develop confidence, resilience and practical knowledge for adulthood. This full‑time role is to begin as soon as possible, continuing through to the next academic year, Monday to Friday.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver and adapt Functional Skills lessons (English and/or Maths) to meet a wide range of SEMH needs, ensuring learning is accessible, engaging and appropriately scaffolded.
- Work closely with support and teaching staff to break learning into manageable steps, reinforce key concepts and create achievable, personalised learning goals.
- Use trauma‑informed and relational teaching strategies to promote focus, participation and emotional safety, including structured routines, visual prompts and hands‑on activities.
- Support students with emotional regulation, modelling calm responses, offering in‑the‑moment reassurance, and using restorative approaches to help students re‑engage positively.
- Encourage positive learning behaviours, building strong, trusting relationships that help students feel secure, valued and motivated.
- Track and assess progress in Functional Skills, providing constructive feedback and adapting planning to ensure continuous development.
Pre‑requisites:
- Experience teaching, tutoring or delivering structured learning to children or young people—ideally within SEMH, alternative provision, PRUs, mainstream SEND settings, tutoring or youth work.
- Strong understanding of SEMH needs and how they can affect engagement, behaviour and readiness to learn.
- Ability to apply calm, trauma‑informed responses and maintain a consistent, supportive classroom environment.
- Knowledge of active teaching methods, such as modelling tasks, chunking information, practical learning activities and clear concept explanations.
- Relevant qualifications, e.g. QTS, PGCE, Functional Skills teaching experience, or equivalent.
