Consultant Physician in Acute or General Internal Medicine (Ref: 251493)

Full Time – 40 hours per week

Fixed term 12 month contract

Salary in range £111,430 – £148,064 per annum

Distant Island Allowance £2,578 per annum and Relocation Assistance of up to £4,000

NHS Shetland is the most northerly health service in Scotland. We are a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of highly integrated, person centred and multi-professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations.

An opportunity has arisen to join a team of Medical and Emergency Medicine Consultants in the provision of healthcare in the Shetland Islands. The job of Consultant Physician in Acute or General Medicine in the Gilbert Bain Hospital is for someone who wishes to practice a wide-ranging role as generalist and not that of a super specialist or narrow focused physician. As the role can be demanding and patients present with a broad range of pathologies, the medical team work closely and collaboratively together offering mutual support and advice, which is also the case across the wider consultant team. In addition to seeking support of locally based colleagues we are also able to seek advice from a wide range of specialist colleagues in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, our local tertiary referral centre.

The post holder will be expected to provide initial care for acutely unwell adults across a range of medical presentations. The post holder will also be expected to have a number of inpatients under their name as well as providing general medical clinics. We would welcome applications from clinicians from an Acute or General Medicine background.

We are offering a 12 month full-time post (WTE 1.0) covering maternity leave with a standard contract. Relevant travel and accommodation costs will be covered by NHS Shetland but may be classed as a Benefit in Kind and subject to tax.

This is a beautiful part of the world, with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from the metropolitan centres. The diverse nature of Shetland’s culture, the stunning scenery, the wildlife, even the local dialect, as well as the spread of different islands all make for particular professional and personal challenges.
