Job Description:

A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Speke is seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This is a full‑time role supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to engage positively with learning, develop emotional regulation skills, and achieve their full potential. Staff work collaboratively to create a safe and supportive environment where pupils can thrive both academically and emotionally.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, and additional learning needs.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to promote engagement, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Support pupils in managing their emotions and behaviours using positive behaviour strategies and de‑escalation techniques.
  • Assist pupils in accessing the curriculum and engaging in classroom activities.
  • Work closely with class teachers, the SENCO, and pastoral teams to implement support plans and behaviour strategies.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing, reporting concerns where appropriate.
  • Support pupils during transitions, break times, and other less structured parts of the school day.
  • Encourage positive social interactions, resilience, independence, and self‑esteem.
  • Promote safeguarding, inclusion, and equality of opportunity for all pupils.

Qualifications

  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with pupils, staff, and families.
  • A commitment to supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing and educational progress.
  • GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, SEND, challenging behaviour, or vulnerable backgrounds.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Relevant qualifications in Teaching Assistance, Childcare, Youth Work, Psychology, Health & Social Care, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting pupils with Autism (ASC), ADHD, attachment difficulties, trauma‑informed needs, or other SEND.
  • Knowledge of restorative practice, Team Teach, MAPA, or other positive behaviour support approaches.
  • Experience within a primary school, specialist provision, alternative provision, or SEMH setting.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and SEND legislation.
