University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. This role is a Healthcare Assistant in Critical Care, supporting critically ill patients across General Intensive Care, Surgical High Dependency, Neuro Intensive Care, and Cardiac Intensive Care. You will work closely with nurses, doctors and allied health professionals to deliver high‑quality care in a fast‑paced, emotionally challenging environment.
Located on the south coast with direct rail links to London and close to the New Forest and South Downs, UHS offers an ideal setting for living and working. We provide a one‑week induction programme, ongoing training and development, and a flexible working environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with personal care and daily living needs.
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families.
- Support infection prevention and control procedures.
- Help maintain a clean, safe and well‑equipped clinical environment.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality patient care.
- Care for patients who require intensive monitoring and life support following major surgery, trauma or serious medical conditions.
Requirements
Essential criteria
- Completed care certificate or ability to complete within six months of appointment.
- Completed secondary education.
- Ability to move and handle patients and equipment.
- Evidence of empathy, patience and dependability.
- Ability to deal with a range of difficult situations.
- Ability to take instruction and work within the role limits.
- Ability to cope with fluctuating demands and pressures of the role.
- Awareness of and adherence to the care certificate standards.
- Capable of completing core HCSW competencies within 12 months of appointment.
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in an acute hospital setting, HCA experience or volunteering in a caring role.
- Understanding of the acute hospital environment and the role of an HCA.
