Construction Materials Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3) – BAM Nuttall Ltd

Key Responsibilities

As a BAM Apprentice you will learn from experienced colleagues and quickly contribute to the team. The apprenticeship will provide hands‑on experience on site and in the laboratory, carrying out material testing and supporting the HS2 project.

  • Carry out sampling and testing of construction materials, soils, aggregates and concrete in line with standards and client specifications.
  • Carry out a point‑of‑work risk assessment.
  • Ensure equipment is calibrated and report any broken or damaged equipment to the line manager.
  • Enter and complete records, readings and results on appropriate sheets.
  • Communicate clear instructions to site teams based on a thorough understanding of client specification and expectations.
  • Provide clear and concise data to demonstrate compliance.
  • Carry out testing using calibrated equipment to demonstrate compliance.
  • Deliver daily/weekly work programmes with site teams.
  • Maintain a detailed site diary.
  • Maintain a personal CPD record and CV to demonstrate career development.
  • Carry out any other relevant duties as requested from time to time.

About You

You enjoy working outdoors on real‑world projects, are practical, reliable and detail‑focused, and take pride in following procedures accurately. You thrive in a busy site environment, work safely, and communicate clearly with site teams. You have basic maths skills, can record data accurately, and remain calm and focused around machinery and in fast‑paced settings. You are motivated by contributing to tangible projects and are keen to build a long‑term career in construction or materials testing.

Additional Requirements:

You must be 18+ and hold a full UK manual driving licence. Apprenticeship eligibility: be 16 or over, not in full‑time education, have lived in the UK for at least 3 years, have the right to work in the UK, and should not already hold a Level 3, degree or higher qualification in a closely related subject, or have significant experience in the same field.

Program Overview

The apprenticeship is 20 months long, combining real‑time experience with structured training delivered by expert tutors at Tiro. You will complete at least 6 hours per week of off‑the‑job training, including virtual learning, practical activities and assignments. A dedicated mentor will support your development on the job.

Upon completion you will have the skills to work as a materials technician and progress within the industry. The programme may lead to professional recognition such as Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) and opportunities to advance to higher‑level qualifications, such as degree apprenticeships in Materials or Chemistry.
