Project Overview
For more than 75 years, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has supported the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy. Bechtel is collaborating with AWE to deliver the preliminary design for facilities within the Future Materials Campus, providing delivery and technical support to ensure the project is completed on schedule and within budget.
Job Summary
This position is for a Senior Electrical, Controls and Instrumentation Engineer working on a multi‑year UK nuclear infrastructure programme at the conceptual design phase. The Senior Engineer will act as a technical representative for engineering activities, assisting Engineering Managers and the B&S Project Engineer. Responsibilities include designing, documenting, reviewing, and coordinating engineering work, preparing technical reports and studies, and supporting procurement documentation.
Major Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct independent Electrical, Control and Instrumentation work requiring engineering judgment.
- Execute deliverables according to requirements and design criteria using approved procedures, practices, and codes.
- Create Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Telecoms plans, specifications and drawings to support facility designs to a RIBA 3 level.
- Support studies into environmental impacts and sustainability of the design/construction process.
- Coordinate Electrical, Control, Instrumentation and Telecoms efforts with specialty groups, disciplines, the client, vendors, contractors and other functional groups.
- Prepare, coordinate and review designs, studies, reports and proposals.
- Participate in 3D model reviews and safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP), and review compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
- Review and coordinate deliverables with other disciplines and suppliers to ensure design intent is incorporated.
- Identify issues (risks and value improvement opportunities) and clarify areas of complexity throughout the architectural design work.
- Review and coordinate the deliverables of junior electrical control and instrumentation engineers.
- Support informal studies and technical briefings with customers, suppliers and other departments and disciplines.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical, Automation/Controls/Instrumentation, Electro‑Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering (or related subject) from an accredited university or college.
- Minimum of 15 years progressive Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Experience in nuclear or highly regulated environments.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in a project delivery environment.
- Chartered with the IET (or similar).
- Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, design criteria, guides & procedures and codes relevant to electrical, control and instrumentation discipline.
- Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, control, instrumentation and telecoms discipline engineering techniques, system design and engineering calculations.
- Prior experience in industrial process facility design preferred.
- Knowledge of control system verification to recognised standards, e.g., BS 61508.
- Ability to read and understand building drawings and schematics.
- Knowledge of CAD design methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of NavisWorks.
- Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Strong organisational skills.
- General nuclear experience a plus.
- Must be able to obtain SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.
Other
- Position based primarily at Aldermaston UK; travel to Bechtel’s London office may be required.
- Three days per week working at the project site and up to two days working from home or the Bechtel office.
- The position is open to United Kingdom nationals only.
