Background
The Estates Division manages the university’s extensive estate, responsible for master planning, operations, and maintenance across two main sites and additional properties across the UK and Dubai. Your role will support high standards of fire safety across buildings and accommodation.
Role Summary
The Fire Door Specialist works under a Team Leader, carrying out installation, repair, and maintenance of fire doors, ensuring statutory compliance and maintaining safety across accommodation. The role requires independent working, communication with Customer Services Managers, and adherence to fire safety legislation.
Main Duties
- Install fire door sets and fire‑rated hardware; perform critical repairs and general maintenance including intumescent strips and seals.
- Create repair schedules using the CAFM system and maintain detailed audit trails of remediation work.
- Coordinate with Accommodation and Customer Service Managers to schedule maintenance.
- Interpret verbal instructions, drawings and specifications to ensure compliance.
- Support other tasks and demonstrate flexibility within a multi‑disciplined team.
- Participate in training to keep up with evolving technology and legislative requirements.
- Guide apprentices and colleagues on fire door practices.
- Record job information, drive safely, ensure clean work areas, and monitor service standards.
- Recommend improvements and share expertise with external institutions.
- Support equality and diversity by avoiding bias.
- Perform any other duties reasonably expected by the manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
- A Level or equivalent Level 3 qualification; GCSE C/4 Maths and English.
- FDIS Diploma or BM TRADA Q‑Mark certifications for fire door maintenance or installation.
- Significant experience in fire door maintenance/installation with a BM TRADA registered organisation.
- Recognition of CITB/EITB qualifications or equivalent; City and Guilds certificates preferred.
- Knowledge of BS 8214 and BS 9999 codes, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and health and safety legislation.
- Practical working knowledge across multiple disciplines in maintenance settings.
- Problem‑solving, customer‑service attitude, excellent communication, time management, and organisational skills.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office and university systems.
- Safe use of hand and power tools; tidy work practices.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and collaborate with a team.
- High degree of initiative, judgement, resourcefulness, and flexibility.
- Understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion policies.
- Full driving licence.
