Staff Nurse (RMN)

Haven is a 5‑bed female PICU providing intensive, trauma‑informed care to women experiencing the most acute phase of serious mental illness. This highly rewarding role is for nurses who want to deliver skilled, least‑restrictive care in a calm, low‑stimulus environment where clinical judgement, therapeutic relationships and teamwork are central to daily practice.

We are moving into a brand‑new, purpose‑built inpatient facility, offering an exciting opportunity to work in a modern, therapeutic environment and help shape the future of our service.

We welcome applications from experienced mental health nurses looking for their next challenge, as well as newly qualified nurses seeking a well‑supported first role within the NHS.

Key Duties

  • Deliver least restrictive, trauma‑informed care, prioritising therapeutic engagement, relational security and skilled de‑escalation.
  • Work closely with medical staff, psychology and AHPs in a fully integrated MDT; participate in risk assessment, care planning and daily team meetings.
  • Support, mentor and provide informal leadership to shift team members while contributing to service development, quality improvement and ward culture.
  • Participate in rotational 24‑hour care and support the continuity of care for patients with complex mental health needs.
  • Attend mandatory training such as PMVA, Breakaway, Manual Handling and improved mental health training like RAID and CBT.

Additional Information

  • Successful completion of Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training is a condition of employment.
  • Applications from candidates requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship are not eligible for this post.
  • Employment requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check; the Trust will cover the cost. Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service may present a valid DBS certificate instead of a new check.

Person Specification

Knowledge, skills and training

  • Registered Nurse (Mental Health)
  • Preceptorship or working towards it
  • Ability to take charge of a ward/case load regularly

Information Technology

  • Basic IT skills, normally obtained through practice or practical training

Personal Qualities/Attributes

  • Work independently with minimum supervision
  • Collaborate effectively within a team
  • Good organisational skills
  • Use initiative and positively influence others

Additional requirements

  • Meet contractual requirements and participate in 24‑hour care
  • Fitness level to complete PMVA, Breakaway training and Manual Handling (practice and theory)
  • Demonstrable written and spoken English to a standard enabling full execution of role duties
  • Travel to Trust services using own vehicle as required, subject to Equality Act provisions

Job specific experience

  • Ability to supervise other staff

Managerial/supervisory experience

  • Supervised experience gained during clinical placements
  • Ability to mentor students
