Job Overview
As part of the prison support team you will perform varied physical tasks, including lifting, carrying, walking and standing for long periods. Depending on the prison, you may have periods of lone work and you may work day and night shifts. Full training and a supportive team will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Ensure secure entry and exit of staff, visitors and vehicles.
- Carry out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles.
- Escort vehicles and contractors around the prison site.
- Issue and collect staff keys and radios.
- Patrol and search perimeter fence areas.
- Operate the prison radio system and monitor CCTV.
- Welcoming visitors, escorting them, logging mail and reporting contraband.
- Photograph prisoners and process prisoners’ property and parcels.
- Deliver and collect food trollies, and use electric tug vehicles when necessary.
- Collect mail from local sorting office, monitor PIN phone system and maintain logs.
- Respond to incidents and emergencies in accordance with national and local policies.
Hours and Shift Pattern
Average 37 hours per week, including night, evening, weekend and bank/public holidays on a rolling shift pattern. Shift times and frequency of nights vary by establishment.
Salary and Benefits
Salary figures quoted are for a 37‑hour week inclusive of 20% unsocial hours working allowance. In addition to base pay you will receive:
- Annual leave 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years (pro-rata).

Qualifications
- No formal qualifications required.
- Good judgement, common sense, responsibility and teamwork.
- Ability to fulfil spoken aspects of the role in English (and Welsh when required in Wales).
