Location

The role is based within the Asset Management department and focuses on the East Yorkshire region, operating in and around the Hull area and East coast. Candidates must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the area, although some travel across the Yorkshire region is expected for team meetings, investigations and site visits.

Working type

Permanent, 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Flexibility is required as there is some weekend and out of hours work at times.

Yorkshire Water provides essential water and wastewater services to the Yorkshire region, ensuring clean and safe drinking water and proper wastewater management. We protect the environment, support communities, and meet regulatory expectations through initiatives such as Asset Management.

Where you fit in

As a Trade Effluent Sampling Officer you will inspect and sample industrial discharges against defined parameters and legislation, contributing to Yorkshire Water’s risk management and corporate strategy. You will produce evidence for enforcement, serve as a professional witness when needed, and engage with stakeholders effectively.

Responsibilities

• Conduct sampling of trade effluents at industrial sites across the region and, where necessary, within the public sewer network to trace contaminants. • Generate data used for enforcement, including witness statements in collaboration with the legal team. • Liaise with customers, operational teams and stakeholders, negotiating and influencing to achieve compliance. • Operate within corporate policies such as Health and Safety and training requirements. • Maintain your caseload independently and take ownership of all assignments.

Skills & qualifications you will need

  • Valid full driving licence with no more than 6 points
  • Strong IT skills, especially MS Office and company systems
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict‑resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned caseload
  • Good influencing and negotiation skills
  • Experience with Health and Safety management processes and systems
  • Adherence to corporate structure and policies
  • Flexibility to work outside core hours, including weekends

Additional benefits of experience

  • Knowledge or awareness of environmental legislation
  • Knowledge of the Water Industry Act 1991, particularly sections 111, 118 and 171
  • Basic understanding of aqueous chemistry
  • Background in environmental or chemistry, academic or operational
  • Industrial experience within the water utilities sector, including wastewater assets such as public sewer network, pumping stations, and treatment plants
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
