About the Role
Join our dedicated Aseptic Pharmacy Team at the Western General Hospital and play a key role in delivering high‑quality cancer care, nutrition, clinical trials, and outpatient services within NHS Lothian. This is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic pharmacy support workers to contribute to the delivery of innovative treatments, clinical trials, and service development in a dynamic healthcare setting.
The Western General Hospital (WGH) Aseptic Unit provides specialist services treating haematology day‑case patients; intravenous parenteral nutrition for inpatients across a range of specialties; outpatient parenteral antimicrobial treatment; and clinical trials for cancer and non‑cancer conditions.
Recent investment in the ability to provide advanced therapy medicinal products/gene therapy medicinal products within NHS Lothian has resulted in building work beginning on a specialist aseptic unit that will be able to deliver an increased range of gene therapy medicines to the health board from the start 2027.
Responsibilities
- Delivering high‑quality pharmacy services to both inpatients and outpatients
- Working between the WGH Aseptic Unit and the new Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product unit
- Contributing to service improvement projects and personal development initiatives
Key Skills & Qualifications
- A strong alignment with NHS Lothian’s values and a willingness to contribute to our dynamic team
- Flexibility, reliability and organisational abilities
- Enthusiasm and good communication skills
- National 4 or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics
- SCQF Level 6 units relevant to post within 12 months following probationary period
- Completion of Healthcare Support Workers induction standards within 12 months following probationary period
- An eagerness to learn about clean room environments and aseptic procedures
- A diligent, reliable, and flexible approach to work

Employment Update
As from 1st April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part‑time hours will be reduced pro‑rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.
