Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a 2‑year fixed‑term contract Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The role will involve 8 programmed activities (PAs) per week as an annualised contract, including on‑call duties as part of a 1 in 14 rota for Obstetrics. The post will be based at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, working across gynaecology and obstetrics services, with a focus on the Obstetrics and Tommy’s Miscarriage Clinic.

The successful candidate will be expected to comply with all local policies and procedures, including Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. Where the Consultant manages employees, they must observe local employment and personnel policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

GYNAECOLOGICAL

The Birmingham Women’s Hospital offers Colposcopy Clinics, a Cancer Unit, Urogynaecology service, Minimal Access Surgery Service including an endometriosis centre, Emergency Gynaecology Service, a complex termination of pregnancy service and an Assisted Conception Unit. These contribute to the Trust’s Clinical Strategy, supported by a strong general gynaecological service.

OBSTETRIC

The Trust carries out approximately 7,400 births per annum, supported by lecturers, sub‑speciality trainees and specialist trainees (ST1–7), and the Regional Neonatal Service. It is a tertiary referral centre for obstetric problems throughout the region, offering maternal medicine clinics in cardiology, neurology, haematology, endocrine disorders, renal disease and rheumatology.

The post will lead governance management for Maternity Services, including risk management, incident review, learning from adverse events, quality improvement, oversight of guidelines and policies, collaboration across the wider MDT, and ensuring compliance with national standards and external reviews.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Weekly Job Plan (Annualised Contract)

  • Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic – 0.5 PAs
  • ANC – 1.00 PAs
  • Delivery Suite/CS – 1.13 PAs
  • ANWR/PNWR – 0.75 PAs
  • Research – 2.00 PAs
  • SPA & Clinical Admin – 1.50 PAs
  • On‑call – 1.72 PAs
  • Total – 8.6 PAs

This annualised contract delivers 42 sessions for each PA over one year, facilitating prospective cover on the delivery suite while maintaining a consistent case load in the Antenatal Clinic.

Qulifications

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (‘equivalence’ must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
  • Evidence of ongoing engagement with research
  • Further higher degree

Clinical experience and effectiveness

  • Formal medical teaching training
  • Evidence of teaching and training at regional, national or international level

Personal attributes

  • Good leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, midwives and other agencies
  • Enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure
  • Good organisational and management skills
  • Supportive and tolerant
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team

  • Prepared to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital, or remain resident whilst on call
