Role Description

The Assistant Manager, Exeter is a full-time, on-site role based in Newbury, responsible for supporting the Store Manager in the day-to-day running of the store. This includes leading and motivating store associates, organizing daily floor operations, and ensuring excellent customer service at all times.

The role involves supporting merchandising and stock flow, maintaining store standards, and helping to deliver an appealing and safe shopping environment. The Assistant Manager contributes to achieving sales and profitability targets by monitoring performance, managing costs, and responding quickly to changing priorities.

This position also supports recruitment, onboarding, coaching, and scheduling of team members, fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing store culture aligned with TJX values.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in retail or customer-facing roles, with a track record of supporting store operations and customer service excellence.
  • People leadership skills, including coaching, team motivation, delegation, and the ability to build positive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities, with confidence in handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort with working to targets, understanding basic retail KPIs (sales, margins, shrinkage), and making practical, data-informed decisions.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with customers, peers, and senior leaders.
  • Adaptability and resilience, with a problem-solving mindset and the ability to respond quickly to unexpected challenges on the shop floor.
  • Basic IT literacy (e.g., POS systems, email, simple reporting tools) and willingness to learn internal systems and processes.
  • Previous supervisory or keyholder experience in a retail or hospitality environment is highly advantageous.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and peak trading periods as required.
