Overview

Course Team Leader – English – GCSE and Functional SkillsHarrow WealdFull time and Permanent£40,548 – £47,939

We are seeking a Course Team Leader to lead the coordination and continuous development of the curriculum across GCSE and Functional Skills programmes. The role includes teaching across a range of programmes and playing a central role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of provision. You will work closely with the Section Manager to support quality assurance activities, including course health checks and external verification. In addition, you will contribute to the design and development of an engaging curriculum, incorporating extracurricular activities and meaningful employer engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and develop cross-college GCSE and Functional Skills English programmes.
  • Make optimal use of team resources including staffing and consumables.
  • Maintain high standards of retention and achievement in line with targets.
  • Ensure an effective student induction programme to maximise engagement.
  • Review and promote use of course materials and best practices to enhance learner experience.
  • Assist the Section Manager in monitoring actions that positively impact course performance.
  • Liaise with College staff and external bodies to maintain quality.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in English or related subject.
  • Minimum Level 5 teaching qualification recognised by the FE sector (e.g. DET, PGCE for FE or Secondary sector) or be willing to work towards this, supported by the college.
  • GCSE in Maths and English at Grade C/4 or willing to achieve.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum of two years’ experience of teaching GCSE English and Functional Skills, preferably including teaching 16–18 year olds in Further Education.
  • Some experience of leading or supervising a team.
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing strategies to raise attendance, retention and achievement of learners.
  • Experience of curriculum design and development.
  • Experience of organising and implementing quality systems and procedures.
  • Ability to teach English at Level 3.

  • The ability to improve attendance and engage reluctant learners.
  • Good classroom practice and pedagogic knowledge.
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
