Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced SCP to join the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service. The post holder will act as a SCP as defined by the Royal College of Surgeons (2022). The post holder will work closely with their clinical leads to develop their role according to the needs of the team or service. They will work as part of the Sarcoma Team working closely with the multidisciplinary team and will be supervised by named Consultant Surgeons. The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making relating to the management of a surgical patient combining intraoperative practice and perioperative care. This will be demonstrated through defined competencies and in line with Trust protocols. They will provide advanced clinical skills and advice demonstrating a sound understanding of identification, assessment, diagnosis and management of surgical patients and determine whether patients are discharged or admitted as appropriate and as such, supported by the Consultant Surgeon. They will contribute to clinical governance within the service by leading audit and research as part of the multi-disciplinary team within their area of expertise.

Responsibilities

  • To be an expert clinical practitioner, ensuring patients receive high quality clinical care whilst undertaking defined invasive procedures, utilising specialist knowledge and skills.
  • To act as a first or second assistant to the Consultant Surgeons or other members of the surgical team.
  • To participate in pre and post-operative care of surgical patients, with particular attention to appropriate work up of patients and the establishment of effective pathways for complex procedures, wound care, wound healing and the prevention of infection in surgical wounds.
  • To be a motivated, dynamic advanced surgical practitioner, striving for improvement in care and practice.
  • To monitor quality and continuity of patient care, taking action to address improvements as required.
  • To ensure that care is based and planned on an individual assessment for a positive patient experience.
  • To liaise closely with the MDT administrative teams to ensure patients are discussed where appropriate at the relevant MDT meetings.
  • To liaise closely with the theatre schedulers and MDT administrative meetings to ensure where appropriate that cancer waiting times are adhered to.
  • To communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
  • To be accountable for quality governance within own area of practice.
  • To act as a role model and expert clinician, contributing to the training of junior medical staff and providing support and guidance to all staff delivering care to patients.
