Advanced Paediatric or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

Location: Ormskirk Hospital, UK. Permanent position, Band 8a NHS AfC. Working hours: 36 hours per week, on an 8‑week rotating rota including nights and weekends. Salary: £57,528 – £64,750 per annum.

Job Overview

The role is a full‑time Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with responsibility for leading clinical care in the Neonatal Unit (Level 2, 10 cot, including IC, HDU, special care, transitional care) and supporting the Paediatric Assessment and Observation Unit.

A strong clinical and leadership role: ~80% clinical practice, remaining time on quality improvement, audit, education, mentorship, and strategic governance within paediatrics.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced autonomous clinical practice for neonates and associated families, including ordering and interpreting investigations, prescribing (if NMP), and case‑management.
  • Lead and develop nursing practice, promote excellence, and implement improvement initiatives.
  • Support, supervise and mentor nursing staff and doctors.
  • Collaborate with the Matron, Directorate Manager and senior paediatric team to meet local and national governance agendas.
  • Generate and contribute to ward audits, research and quality improvement projects.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with RN (Child or Adult). RSCN.
  • Advanced Clinical Nursing qualification – paediatric or neonatal (Degree preferred; Masters level desirable).
  • Completed Advanced Clinical Practice or Advanced Paediatric/Neonatal Nursing Practice.
  • Certificates: APLS / PLS / NLS – instructor qualification (preferred).
  • Valid Enhanced DBS with Children’s Barred Lists check.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

  • Significant recent clinical experience in paediatrics or neonatal settings.
  • Ability to recognise and manage critically ill children and neonates.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and driving change.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection and local/national legislation.
  • Strong audit, research and evidence‑based practice skills.
  • Excellent communication, teaching and mentorship abilities.
  • Experience in ITU or HDU suitable for Advanced Paediatric/Nurine Practitioner.
  • Clinical governance awareness – risk, audit, policy, training.
