Overview of the role
Electrical Technical Principal – lead design for HV power transmission infrastructure projects including onshore and offshore HV substations, HVDC converter stations, OHL and HV cable installations. Experience delivering major transmission infrastructure projects in the UK and abroad, with accreditation in National Grid CDAE / LCDAE and TP141 (substations) desirable.
Responsibilities
- Lead primary electrical design on major utility power transmission projects across lifecycle stages (feasibility, optioneering, FEED, planning, EPC tender, detailed design, owners engineer/construction supervision).
- Provide electrical discipline lead design input, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client regulations.
- Prepare/review clarifications to RFIs, approve technical deliverables and provide technical guidance to the engineering team.
- Deliver key input at project bid stage covering resourcing, capability statements and delivery methodology plans.
- Collaborate with other project discipline leaders and stakeholders to meet technical and commercial requirements.
- Act as primary client interface, attending progress meetings and workshops.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Identify and resolve technical issues during design and construction phases.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, overseeing design work and providing construction support.
- Incorporate new technologies into designs.
Candidate Specification – Technical Expertise
- Deep knowledge of electrical engineering substation principles for transmission and distribution infrastructure.
- Experience delivering technical quality management, with clear plans for reviews, checks, and approvals.
- Desirable: IOSH / NEBOSH certified, National Grid CDAE / LCDAE, Design Assurance (HV Plant) authorisations.
Project Technical Lead – Leadership & Quality
- Lead electrical engineering team in design at all lifecycle stages.
- Ensure technical quality within project scope, cost, and time.
- Collaborate with the Project Manager to develop the electrical design team.
- Coordinate interfaces, resolve design issues.
- Contribute to proposal writing and resource requirement assessment.
Design Coordination and Collaboration
- Integrate primary electrical designs with civil, environmental, and secondary design disciplines.
- Ensure fully coordinated design outputs.
Attention to Detail
- Review, check, and approve electrical engineering design documentation for FEED and construction level packages.
- Maintain compliance with relevant standards.
Communication and Leadership
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities in guiding engineering team and collaborating with stakeholders.
Experience
- Relevant experience in power transmission electrical engineering design across a wide variety of transmission and distribution projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Chartered Engineer designation.
